Cocoon

Diving for cover beneath my deepest doubts
As the absolute and final certainty,
This dreadful cloister a sole retreat
From the crushing responsibility of being;
And gripping onto old life for grim death
In hopeless bargaining for eternal safety:
Airless, meagre and unessential;
I'm suspended impossibly between
The suffocating sanctuary of prayers
And a terrible rebirth into something larger.
